Robert Charles

Robert Charles attended Focal Point Visual Arts Learning Centre in 2001, receiving a diploma in basic photography (film) with an introduction to the traditional black and white darkroom. This is when his passion with the camera really began to blossom. He uses both analogue and digital with an appreciation and love for “old school” Polaroids and vintage box cameras, as well as smart phones, thus giving him a medley of tools for visual storytelling.

Though born and raised in Saskatchewan, he has called Vancouver home for the last thirty-three years. He has partaken in many successful solo and group shows since 2009, and his work can be seen on the cover of Event Literary Journal’s 2010 summer edition; in the lobby of the Sheraton Wall Centre, Vancouver; at truth and beauty gallery, Vancouver; and as part of a clothing collaboration with LegendaryX, who used his imagery in the SS15 line. Working closely with designers, Charles’s work has also been featured in show suites for new developments in British Columbia and Alberta. His works have been purchased by collectors locally and abroad.

Charles’s visual interpretation of life in motion seems to be the most natural of all. Mixed with his moody and romantic visual sense, he takes every movement and every shadow mixed with atmospheric light to wrap these moments around his brain to process the final result. He rarely repeats the same post-processing method twice, if at all. His diverse photography and creative style opens his work to an unlimited audience.
