Join Capture and Monte Clark Gallery at the opening reception for the Selected Exhibition Snack Sakura, presenting new pictures by Greg Girard, taken in Japan between 2017 and 2023. Greg Girard will be in attendance.

Girard’s expansive photographic project documents snack bars across Japan from Okinawa to Hokkaido. These entertainment bars, known locally as a “snack,” are generally clustered around train stations but can also be found in residential neighbourhoods. A hot spot for salarymen, the bars peaked in popularity in the 1980s, with many still featuring Shōwa-era decor. Bottles of whiskey and shochu with customer name tags draped around them make regulars feel at home. Karaoke is an integral part of the experience.

The project has come to define the cultural geography of Japan. From glowing awnings and signs to empty streets, late-night karaoke, and the secret life of the patrons, Girard provides a unique glimpse into life during the after-hours.
