Born in New Westminster, Charles Edgar Stride’s youth featured a variety of experiences from building houses to cycling from New Westminster to Tijuana, Mexico in 1915. In 1920, Stride decided to become a photographer despite his lack of experience and training. By 1925, he opened Stride Studios. Despite stiff competition, Stride Studios grew to employ a staff of 10 and became one of the best-equipped commercial photography studios in B.C. He took 50,000 portraits of the city’s citizens and documented every significant civic event. Unfortunately tragedy struck on Sunday, December 22, 1968 when a fire destroyed his studio.
