Artist Statement

Did you know that every day, roughly eight million pieces of plastic find their way into our oceans? According to Surfers Against Sewage, every year the world produces 381 million tonnes of plastic waste and this is supposed to double by 2034. These are very shocking statistics. We are conscious of how much plastic pollution there is, yet, most of us just ignore it. By showing news articles about plastic pollution in my work, I believe it will encourage people to see the reality of this problem. The articles I’ve chosen are not just about plastic’s effect on animals, but also its effects on us. I used to think that plastic pollution mainly impacted animals but after doing research, I am inspired to show in my work that it also has a huge influence on humans as well. My name is Jade Martell, and it’s time to take action against plastic pollution.
