Active since the early 2000s, the Winnipeg-based artist/filmmaker Kevin Lee Burton was raised
in God’s Lake Narrows First Nation, an Asinīskāwiyiniwak (Rocky Cree) community. Much of his
work challenges preconceptions of life in “Indian Country.” He won the Emerging Talent Award
at imagineNATIVE with Meskanahk (My Path) in 2007, earning further honours at the same
event with Nikamowin (Song). His NFB credits include Writing the Land (2007), featuring
Musqueam elder Larry Grant, and the Webby Award-winning God’s Lake Narrows (2011), hailed
as “an interactive project with no reservations”by The New York Times. “My greatest goal is to
create a fluid connection between ‘traditional’ and technological ideas,” says Burton.
