Artist Statement
In my photo, I capture the essence of the human spirit. When I heard the prompt, It’s a Plastic World, I immediately recalled a conversation with a friend about the plastic personalities and facades we often adopt during our day-to-day lives. I knew I had to draw attention to this issue. The words, “SMILING ON THE OUTSIDE,” represents societal standards to be happy even when you’re not. The plastic bag is a metaphor for the suffocating reality when someone attempts to become something they are not. I deliberately projected the phrase on the bag to symbolize the outward projection of fake feelings. My main goal with this work is to bring this often neglected issue to light. I hope to compel people to understand the importance of being themselves by removing these harmful masks.
