Roya Akbari was born in Tehran, Iran, and currently lives and works in Toronto. She is a media
artist and an independent filmmaker. Since graduating from Emily Carr University of Art and
Design with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in photography (2012), Akbari has made works composed
of writing, film footage and video. Rooted in experimental documentary as a form, her work
creates resonances between visual art and cinema. Her interdisciplinary practice has been
presented in both gallery and cinema settings. Akbari’s works screened internationally at film
festivals including Edinburgh International Film Festival in Scotland, Bristol Radical Film Festival
in UK, TIFF Cinematheque in Toronto, International short film festival Oberhausen in Germany
and in galleries such as Art Museum at the University of Toronto. She received a Master of
Visual Studies in Studio from the University of Toronto in 2015.
