Seung Woo Back

Seung Woo Back was born in Daejeon, South Korea, where he currently lives and works. With a strong background and practice in photography, he moved in 2001 to London and received his PhD in Fine Art and Theory.

In his practice Back questions the unquestioned qualities of photography, such as objectivity, directness, and universality. He has been creating works that document and capture the space between what is real and unreal, as well as the untold and invisible stories hidden around as well as within photographic images.

His work has been widely exhibited throughout the world, including a large number of solo exhibitions, including; Gaps, Unrealistic Generals, Gana Art Center, Seoul; Deferred Judgement, Art Sonje Center, Seoul; Real World, Insa Art Space, Seoul; Memento, Doosan Gallery New York; and Blow Up, Misa Shin Gallery, Tokyo. More recent exhibitions include Walking on the Line, Centre A, Vancouver, and Cross Vancouver, Vancouver Biennale, presented on fiften bus shelters throughout Vancouver.

Back has participated in a number of group exhibitions including Dreamland at Centre Pompidou, Paris, and Photography Now, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

Seung Woo Back has been awarded the Ilwoo Photography Award and also the Sajin Bipyong Award.
