Ted Hawryluk

Megaphone vendor Ted Hawryluk holidayed in Victoria back in 1985 for just twenty-one days—and it poured rain nearly every single day. “And on the twenty-first day it cleared up and it was really nice,” he says. On his flight back to hometown Edmonton, he decided to move to Victoria. Everyone had always told Hawryluk how Edmonton smelled like diesel smoke, but he never noticed it for himself until he got off the plane. “Second I got off the airplane, I said, ‘I’m moving!’” And three months later, he did. He first started selling street papers fourteen years ago.
