Born in Tokyo, Japan, Tsunenojo (Paul Louis) Okamura attended the Technical Fine Arts School of Tokyo Imperial University and worked as the Professor of Drawing for St. Ann’s Academy in New Westminster after immigrating to British Columbia in 1891. Okamura created portraits based on photographs, likely leading to his interest in photography. He built a home and studio in 1902 and operated a storefront studio until 1931. Known for his eye for composition and use of light, Okamura was the official photographer for New Westminster’s May Day suite and has portraits hung in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia.
