Artist Statement
My art is centered on people and what is underneath their personas and appearances. The image I’ve created exposes the superficial expectations of beauty and the pressure that is put on young girls to meet that standard. There is this idea of conventional attractiveness, and that you are either born with it or not. Conventional attractiveness intertwines with eurocentric features such as light hair, blue eyes, and thinner body types. For people of different ethnicities, it is impossible to meet those standards. I display my internalized resentment towards western beauty standards through contrast—the inauthenticity of my drawing and the real images of myself in photography. I express a toxic mindset through my work and use it as an outlet for my frustrations. I hope that whoever views my image can empathize with me and many others who feel this way.
