Artist Talk

Artist Talk & Tour | Barbara Strigel: Expect Delays

ADMISSION
Free

Join us at Gallery 881 for an artist talk and tour with Barbara Strigel and curator John Goldsmith. Expect Delays explores urban space through digital collage, layering fragments of photographs with drawings and prints to transform construction zones into studies of form, rhythm, and movement. Strigel’s work prompts us to consider how we perceive the built environment and find balance in everyday spaces.

Through conversation and a guided tour, Strigel and Goldsmith will share insights into the creative process, the role of abstraction in photography, and how temporary urban spaces shape our perception of the city.

Barbara Strigel is a Vancouver-based photographer, collage artist, and bookmaker. She studied photography and printmaking at the Museum School in Boston and taught for 20 years before retiring in 2013 to focus on her fine art practice. Strigel’s work explores urban perception through digital collage, extracting gestures and details from photographs to create layered, elusive imagery. Her work is in collections such as the Museum of Fine Arts Houston and Otis College of Art. Featured in Lenscratch and Contemporary Collage Magazine, she has upcoming exhibitions at Blue Sky Gallery, Portland, and Head On Festival, Sydney.

John Goldsmith is the Curator and Director of Gallery 881, a contemporary lens-based art space in Vancouver. With a background in chemistry, he transitioned from science to the arts, developing a practice in photography and fine art printing. He was an invited artist for the inaugural Capture Photography Festival (2013) and winner of the festival’s 2016 public art competition. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at Format Festival (UK), Third Floor Gallery (Wales), and Head On Photo Festival (Australia). Before founding Gallery 881, he co-directed 560 Gallery and established PrintMaker Studio, a fine art print and framing studio.
