Jennifer Baichwal’s Manufactured Landscapes follows Edward Burtynsky as he photographs the effects of China’s massive industrial revolution. The Three Gorges Dam, sprawling factory floors and Shanghai’s staggering urban renewal are subjects for his lens. The film extends the narratives of Burtynsky’s photographs, meditating on human impact on the planet without striving for simplistic judgements or reductive resolutions. In the process, it shifts our consciousness about the world and the way we live in it.
