Please join OHCE-ECHO for the opening reception of their latest exhibition NOVA Gallery: 1976–81 curated by Francesca Bennett.
NOVA Gallery has been at the centre and the periphery of many histories of photography in Vancouver. Acknowledging the stories that have already been told, OHCE-ECHO presents “a little history” of the gallery, centred on a poster archive documenting the fifty-odd exhibitions that were held at 1972 West 4th Avenue between December 1976 and June 1981.
Francesca Bennett studied photography at Emily Carr Institute from 2004 to 2008, with teachers Marian Penner Bancroft, Sabine Bitter, Randy Bradley, Chris Czartoryski, Diane Evans, Arni Haraldsson, Paul Hess, Raymond Lum, Sandra Semchuk and Elizabeth MacKenzie, and Howard Ursuliak, and with technicians Jack Buquet and Geoffrey Wallang, and department coordinator William Cupit. Since then, she has worked locally in archives, collections, and administration, and supported artists’ practices through exhibitions, public programs, writing, and friendship. In 2024, she opened OHCE-ECHO—pronounced “echo echo”—inspired by the long local history/ies of independent and community-minded galleries and project spaces that includes NOVA Gallery.
