New Leaf Editions is delighted to announce Cyanotype & Ice Workshop led by artist, Valerie Durant.

Workshop
Cyanotype, a camera-less alternative photographic process, utilizes photosensitive chemical solutions & modifiers, such as vinegar, that are applied to, but are not limited to paper and fabric.

Valerie Durant’s exhibition, Influx: Waiting on the Water is showing at the Gallery from March 27 to May 3. The body of work melds botanical ice photographs & sculptures with camera-less cyanotype images. Natural elements from the sculptural installation will be utilized in the workshop to create images as a continuation of a lens-based process. She will demonstrate the darkroom photographic processes of preparing paper and fabric with photosensitive chemicals. You will compose images using botanicals, ice and found objects. The compositions will be exposed to light using a UV device and the power of the sun. Each participant will have the opportunity to complete one or more images and leave with the knowledge to create their own cyanotype & ice prints at home.

All materials will be provided, however, you are welcome to bring additional botanicals and small objects which could be used to resist light in your compositions

Valerie Durant (BFA, MA) engages with found objects, photography, sculpture & sound, centred upon a contemplative, daily ritual of deep connection with nature. She investigates the seemingly invisible interconnectivity between humans and the natural world, exploring concepts of sustainability, regeneration and continuum. She works with ice, organic and inorganic materials which have minimal impact on the environment.

She has received Canada Council Grants (Points & Perforations, 2006), Invisible Rivers (GPAG 2021) Silence of the Sea (2021) & Understory: The Hidden Connections (2004). Her work is held in public and private collections, locally and internationally.
