Isthmuses
A narrow strip of land that connects two larger landmasses, the isthmus is a place and a non-place that is ever changing (much like the location of this garden, connecting different parts of the city). Tom Hsu presents images made during visits to his homeland of Taiwan. Photography also acts as a type of isthmus, weaving together events and memory, exploring geographical, ideological, sociological, political, and philosophical spaces. Hsu visits Taiwan seeking the familiar and unfamiliar; what was once home becomes memory that reactivates in the body as time passes.
