The Amateur’s Gaze

The Amateur’s Gaze explores the ideas of the “gaze”—specifically, how a power dynamic becomes apparent from seeing and being seen and how self-regulation occurs after becoming self-aware—and the democratization of photography, at a time when it seems almost everyone can be a photographer (which leads to more self-awareness for subjects). Mario Szabo is interested in seeing what results from a relationship between a subject and their photographer and what happens when the roles are reversed. Who owns the photos and can the viewer of the photos see what’s intended regardless of the subject? Are the photos of the photographer legitimate considering the model’s experience?
