Tuesday in New York is a search for subject matter that simultaneously floats between absolute realism and the fringes of abstraction. For this series, Dean analyzes fire escapes, giving definition to foreground and background in a compression of details and texture that assemble into facades and divide into repetitions. He composes the picture plane into a limited set of motifs, including metal staircases and their partnered shadows, allowing the barest evidence to remind the viewer that these are dwellings where people live in a major city.
