This project examines how economic and social change is inscribed in Vancouver’s architecture. Juxtapositions of historic structures with contemporary ones become visual synecdoches for the human cost of development.

35mm film for image capture feels quixotic in this digital age, like holding onto Vancouver’s past as the city piledrives into its present and future. Contemporary technology was also instrumental: scanning the negatives, uploading them online, and printing on aluminium using new techniques. Thus, the tension between old and new is inscribed not only in the photos’ content, but in their existence as objects.
