The Gordon Smith Gallery of Canadian Art is a destination and a resource for education and the development of art-based literacy. At the Gordon Smith Gallery, education is seen not as an afterthought to curation, but as the purpose. This interdisciplinary approach ensures that curation is a pedagogical endeavour.
The gallery curates and provides several exhibitions annually. Through the school year, it showcases the Artists for Kids permanent collection for school groups, families, and the public. Each season, works are selected that share a common theme and speak to pertinent historical, social, cultural, political, and environmental issues in a way that is accessible, sparks conversation, and encourages interaction with Canadian art.
The ancillary galleries offer smaller, more focused exhibitions. The Mezzanine Gallery supports the work of the organization’s artist-patrons and the Process Gallery is so named because it hosts exhibitions that demystify the process of artistic creation.
Through Gordon Smith Gallery’s commitment to the visual voices of our country, it is a defining cultural asset in the community.
